1929 wird Armando in Amsterdam geboren. Während seiner Kindheit in Amersfoort wird er Zeuge des Grauens im deutschen Durchgangslager. 1949-54 studiert er Kunstgeschichte und Philosophie in Amsterdam. 1951 beginnt er zu malen, farbkräftige informelle Werke entstehen. 1958 gründet er mit Henk Peeters, Jan Henderikse und Jan Schoonhoven die Gruppe NUL. Ab 1960 entstehen monochrome Materialbilder aus Blechen und Schraubenteilen. Er nimmt an vielen ZERO-Veranstaltungen teil, u.a. der berühmten NUL-Ausstellung im Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Ende der 1970er Jahre kehrt er zur expressiven Malerei zurück und zieht nach Berlin. 1982 nimmt er an der documenta in Kassel teil, 1984 vertritt er die Niederlande auf der Biennale in Venedig. Eine große Themenausstellung im New Yorker MoMA würdigt seine Rolle innerhalb der neuen Malerei. 2009 verleiht ihm Königin Beatrix die Ehrenmedaille für Kunst und Wissenschaft. Armando, der auch als Bildhauer, Musiker, Filmemacher und Schriftsteller erfolgreich war, lebte zuletzt in Potsdam, wo er 2018 verstarb.

 

Armando was born in 1929 in Amsterdam. He grew up in Amersfoort, where he witnessed the horrors of the German concentration camp located there. He studied art history and philosophy in Amsterdam from 1949 to 1954. In 1951, he began to paint colorful works in the style of Art Informel. In 1958, he founded the group NUL together with Henk Peeters, Jan Henderikse, and Jan Schoonhoven. In 1960, he began creating pictures comprised of materials like sheet metal and parts of screws. He also took part in numerous ZERO events, including the famous NUL exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In the late 1970s, he went back to a more expressive painting style and moved to Berlin. In 1982, he participated in the documenta in Kassel. In 1984, he represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale, and a major thematic exhibition at the MoMA in New York payed homage to his influence on new painting. In 2009, Queen Beatrix awarded him the Medal of Honor for Art and Science. Also a successful sculptor, musician, filmmaker, and writer, Armando lived for many years in Potsdam, where he died in 2018.
